What Files Do You Need for DTF Printing?

What Files Do You Need for DTF Printing? — RedrawLogo guide

DTF printers often need clean artwork at the finished print size. Their exact file, color, transparency, and resolution requirements vary by shop and workflow, so ask your provider before preparing files.

Start with a clean master

A manually recreated vector master helps keep letters and borders sharp. A high-resolution transparent PNG may also be useful for a printer's raster workflow. PNG is not a vector format, and exporting one at a larger size does not automatically fix a poor source.

Confirm print details

Ask the print shop for target dimensions, accepted format, color expectations, and whether they want transparent or solid background artwork. Fine lines and tiny negative spaces may reproduce differently on fabric than they do on screen.

Review a proof and a production test

Check text, color, and edges in the digital proof, then let the print shop test actual output. The artwork provider should not promise exact results on every printer, film, ink, or garment without that production context.

Ask about the actual transfer size

A 1000-pixel PNG may be sufficient for a small chest mark yet unsuitable for a large back print. The required pixel dimensions depend on the printer's requested size and resolution. Give the DTF shop the exact width and height you plan to print. Also ask whether it wants artwork with transparent background and whether white ink is generated by its RIP software. Those answers affect preparation more than the file extension alone.

Before you send artwork to the shop

  • Confirm final print dimensions, not only garment size.
  • Check whether the supplied PNG has unwanted pale pixels around edges.
  • Ask how the shop handles color and white underbase on dark garments.
  • Request a small test transfer when fine text or thin lines matter.

The shop's RIP, film, powder, press, and garment affect results. A clean file cannot substitute for its production test.

Compare artwork in the before-and-after examples before deciding what your own file needs.

Should I send SVG or PNG for DTF?

Follow your shop's specifications. A vector master is useful for editing and scaling; some DTF workflows ultimately process a transparent PNG at the requested dimensions.
