When source files are lost, the font may be unknown or unavailable. A redraw can reproduce visible letter shapes, but matching a typeface name is not always possible or necessary for a faithful mark.
Collect lettering examples
Send the largest version of the wordmark, plus other materials using the same lettering. Confirm exact spelling and capitalization. Distorted photos or low-resolution screenshots can make subtle shapes misleading.
Decide whether to outline
Letterforms can be rebuilt as vector shapes for a stable logo appearance. Outlined letters are not the same as having an editable live-font text layer. If editable text is essential, identify that requirement before quoting.
Review spacing carefully
Kerning and proportion matter as much as individual letters. Compare the whole wordmark and specific letter pairs at intended sizes, then approve the proof only when it reflects the original closely enough.
When outlining letters is the sensible choice
A logo often functions as a fixed mark, so accurately outlined lettering can preserve its appearance even when the original font is unavailable. The tradeoff is that changing the business name later requires editing shapes rather than typing new text. If you anticipate frequent wording changes, ask whether a close licensed font or separate editable text layer is possible. Do not assume a font-identification website can find a custom-drawn or heavily modified wordmark.
Details to check in the proof
- Distinctive letters such as R, G, S, or numerals.
- Spaces between difficult letter pairs and between words.
- Cap height, baseline, and stroke weight.
- Behavior at the smallest intended print or screen size.
A faithful visual reconstruction is not a license to distribute a third-party font. Font rights and editable font files are separate matters.
Compare artwork in the before-and-after examples before deciding what your own file needs.
Can the exact original font always be found?
No. Some logos use modified or custom lettering, and a low-quality image may not show enough detail to identify a font reliably.
