How to Check Whether Your Logo Is Really Vector

How to Check Whether Your Logo Is Really Vector — RedrawLogo guide

A crisp preview or a filename ending in .pdf does not prove the logo is vector. PDF and SVG files can contain embedded raster images. The structure of the artwork matters more than its extension.

Zoom and inspect

Open the file in a vector editor and zoom far into a curved edge. True paths stay mathematically smooth, although screen rendering may still show pixels at the display level. Select individual shapes if the application allows it.

Look inside the document

If selecting the mark highlights one rectangular picture, it may be an embedded bitmap. If individual paths, strokes, or text objects are available, the design is likely editable vector artwork. Some files contain a mixture.

Test a practical export

Scale the artwork and export a large preview. Ask the production provider whether it can edit or separate the shapes it needs. A vector file can still have poor geometry, so check the result rather than relying only on the label.

A practical inspection in a vector editor

Import the file and click a letter or curved symbol. If individual paths and anchor points are available, that part is likely vector. If everything selects as one rectangular picture, the logo is probably an embedded bitmap. A PDF may mix vector text with a raster logo, so inspect the mark itself. If you cannot use a vector editor, ask the printer or designer to report whether it can select and modify paths at the scale required.

Signs that deserve a closer look

  • Edges become blocky as the artwork is enlarged.
  • A supposed SVG opens as a single image object.
  • Lettering cannot be isolated from its background.
  • The print shop reports excessive points, open paths, or missing fonts.

Even genuine vector files can be poorly constructed. The test is whether the file meets its intended use.

Compare artwork in the before-and-after examples before deciding what your own file needs.

Can a PDF contain a vector logo?

Yes, but it can also contain only a low-resolution image. Inspect the objects inside the PDF.
