Choosing Between SVG, EPS, PDF, AI, PNG, and DXF

A file extension describes a container, not guaranteed quality. The useful question is which editable or printable properties the receiving workflow needs and whether the actual artwork inside the file meets those needs.

Vector editing and print

SVG is common for web and vector editing; EPS, AI, and PDF appear in many design and print workflows. Compatibility and effects vary by application. Check that paths, fonts, transparencies, and colors survive export as expected.

Raster delivery

PNG is a pixel image, useful for web graphics and some printing workflows at an appropriate size. Its transparency can be helpful, but it will not scale indefinitely like genuine vector paths.

Specialist uses

DXF may be requested for CAD or cutting, but a DXF export does not configure a machine. Ask your supplier for exact requirements and test the delivered file with the software it uses.

Choose by the next handoff

For a website, the developer may use SVG or a PNG export. For a print shop, a PDF or EPS may be requested. For a design editor, an AI file may preserve useful structure in compatible software. For a cutter, the operator may ask for DXF or SVG with strict path requirements. None of these extensions alone proves that fonts are outlined, colors are correct, or paths are clean. Before ordering a conversion, identify the person or system that must open the file next.

A compact file-handoff note

• Name the target software or production provider.
• State the finished physical or pixel dimensions.
• Ask whether editable text, layers, or transparency matter.
• Keep one approved vector master alongside delivery exports.

Features do not survive every export equally. Check the actual file in its target application rather than relying on the extension.

Which single format should I ask for?
